How to Set Up a Ubiquiti UniFi Router

Short answer: To set up a UniFi router: connect the gateway to your modem, install the UniFi app, and create a Ubiquiti account if you do not have one. The app finds the gateway on your network and prompts you to adopt it. After adoption, create your primary network, set the Wi-Fi name and password, and choose WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 security. Use the same app to add access points, change bands, and check connected devices.

Before you begin

A UniFi setup is different from a typical home router. Instead of logging into one admin page, you manage the system through the UniFi Network application. For most homes, the easiest route is the UniFi mobile app on your phone, but you can also run the UniFi Network application in a browser. Compare the two approaches in our guide to the router app versus web interface.

Before unboxing, confirm your internet connection. You need a modem or optical network terminal from your internet provider. Connect an Ethernet cable from that device to the WAN port on the UniFi gateway, then power on the gateway. If you are replacing an older router, review how to set up a new router for the general order of operations.

Connect the gateway and install the app

Connect the Ethernet cable from your modem or ONT to the WAN port on the UniFi gateway. Some UniFi gateways have labels next to the ports, so look for WAN or Internet. Then connect the power adapter and wait for the gateway to boot. If the gateway includes Wi-Fi, it may broadcast a temporary wireless network. If it is a wired gateway without radios, you will complete setup while connected to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable or through a separate UniFi access point.

Install the UniFi app on your phone and sign in. The app will ask for a Ubiquiti account. That account lets the app manage the gateway remotely and keeps all of your UniFi sites in one place. If you prefer to manage everything without a cloud account, the UniFi Network web application offers a local alternative.

Adopt the gateway in the UniFi app

Adoption is the step that makes a new UniFi device part of your network. After you sign in, the app scans the local network, finds the gateway, and shows an Adoption button. Tap it, enter the administrator credentials, and wait for the status to change from Pending to Adopted. The gateway then receives its initial configuration and begins routing traffic for your network.

If adoption fails, make sure your phone is on the same LAN as the gateway. If the gateway has a temporary Wi-Fi network, join that network before trying again. A gateway that does not appear may also need a factory reset. For more detail, see our guide to UniFi adoption failures and how to factory reset a router.

Create your main network and Wi-Fi

Once the gateway is adopted, the app walks you through creating a network. Give the network a name, choose the wireless band or bands, and set a Wi-Fi name and password. This creates your main SSID. The UniFi app also sets the local subnet and DHCP range automatically, which is the right choice for most homes.

Leave the default subnet and DHCP settings alone unless you have a specific reason to change them. If you want separate networks for guests or IoT devices, use additional SSIDs or VLANs later. Start with one simple network, then expand.

Manage Wi-Fi from the app

The UniFi app groups Wi-Fi settings in one place. From the main screen, open the Wi-Fi or network section to change the SSID, password, band, channel, and security mode. If your gateway has more than one band, the app lists each band separately. The router bands explained guide explains how 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands are used by modern Wi-Fi equipment; the Wi-Fi Alliance describes Wi-Fi 7 as improving performance across all three bands.

Set security to WPA3 if every device on your network supports it. WPA3 is the latest Wi-Fi security protocol and protects against password guessing attempts, and it also disallows outdated legacy protocols, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance. If an older device cannot connect, use WPA2/WPA3 transitional mode for that network or keep the older device on a separate guest network. See WPA3 explained for more.

Add access points and switches

The UniFi system is designed to grow. To add a UniFi access point, connect it to power and to the same network as the gateway, then adopt it in the app. The app pushes the existing Wi-Fi settings to the access point, so clients can roam between radios while keeping the same network name. For larger homes, this is similar to building a mesh Wi-Fi system.

For the best performance, connect access points with Ethernet where possible. Wired backhaul keeps the wireless link free for client traffic. The Ethernet backhaul explained guide covers the difference between wired and wireless connections between nodes. If you add a UniFi switch, adopt it the same way and the app learns its ports, which lets you manage VLANs and port settings from one dashboard.

Keep the gateway updated and secure

After adoption, check for firmware updates. The UniFi app normally shows an update option on the device screen. Running current firmware matters for both security and Wi-Fi performance. NIST describes its cybersecurity work as producing standards, guidelines, and best practices that organizations can put into practice immediately; the same principle applies at home: treat security as an ongoing task, not a one-time setup.

Make sure Wi-Fi security is enabled and that the administrator password is not left at the default. The Wi-Fi Alliance notes that WPA3 is mandatory for Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices and includes Protected Management Frames for stronger management traffic protection. For practical steps, see router security basics and how to change your router admin password.

Troubleshooting UniFi setup

Adoption failures are the most common setup problem. Check that the gateway and phone are on the same LAN, that the gateway has an internet connection, and that the phone can reach the management interface. A factory reset often clears a stuck adoption state. If Wi-Fi does not appear after adoption, reboot the gateway, confirm the Wi-Fi radio is enabled in the app, and check the channel.

Interference from neighboring networks can make a channel unusable, so changing the channel in the app is a quick fix. If the gateway connects but the speed feels slow, review your signal strength and look for common Wi-Fi dropouts before changing hardware.

Questions

Do I need extra hardware to set up a UniFi gateway?

No. A UniFi gateway can be adopted with the UniFi mobile app or by running the UniFi Network application on a computer. Optional hardware like a dedicated management device just hosts that software so you do not need to keep a computer running.

What does adopt mean in the UniFi app?

Adoption is the process that makes a new UniFi device show up in the UniFi Network application and accept its configuration. The app finds the device on your LAN and sends it the management credentials and initial settings.

Can I use the UniFi app without a Ubiquiti account?

The mobile app usually asks for a Ubiquiti account for remote access and for managing multiple sites. If you prefer no cloud account, you can run the UniFi Network application locally and open it from a browser on the same network.

How do I create a guest network on UniFi?

In the UniFi app, create a new network and choose Guest as the network type. Give the guest network its own SSID and password, and consider isolating guests from your main LAN so they cannot reach your private devices.

Why is my UniFi gateway not showing up in the app?

The phone and gateway need to be on the same LAN, the gateway needs power and internet access, and the management interface needs to be reachable. Restart the app, then restart the gateway. If it still does not appear, a factory reset may be needed.

Should I use WPA3 on my UniFi network?

Use WPA3 when every device on the network supports it. WPA3 provides stronger authentication and disallows outdated legacy protocols. If an older device cannot connect, use a transitional WPA2/WPA3 mode or keep that device on a separate network.
